Design
Since 1989, when the company formed a new strategy and business idea,
the aim for design, quality and distinctiveness has become even more
important when developing new products.
Kristian Østensen was the designer of our first complete series of
furniture; Rosmersholm. He found inspiration from a period when
tourists and merchants from all over Europe came to the Western parts of Norway.
As a result, this particular part of the country received a lot of influence
from abroad. The building of the jugend city Ålesund is one example from
this period.
The shape of the furniture in the Rosmersholm series has a lot in common
with the Regency and the Biedermeier style. It highlights the flame
birch's special structure and pattern.
In 2003 we wanted to expand our assortment. Our intention was to create a
new series of furniture that represented something different from
Rosmersholm. At the same time, we wanted it to have a timeless design and a
quality which would identify the new series as a product from Stryn.
Several designs were evaluated, but the final decision felt on a furniture
series with simple and soft lines. Kristian Østensen was the designer behind
this series as well. We offer these series produced in two kinds of wood; birch and oak.
The series, which we named Hamsun, consists of furniture with the same
quality as those from our first collection. The Hamsun furniture
reflects the Norwegian culture in furniture. The best example to illustrate
this might be the dining chairs. These chairs are inspired by an old
Norwegian model made by craftsmen in Eastern Norway, which explains
their simple and pure design.
Olav Eldøy is the designer behind our latest furniture series; Dina. His
style has references from the 1930-60 Scandinavian Design and Art Deco
furniture; a style dominated by simple lines and large round arches.
Flame birch is also the material used in the new furniture series. It has
become the trademark of Stryn Møbelindustri, and Olav Eldøy has taken
advantage of its strengths through the aestetic lines that can be found in
his furniture.
All of our furniture is produced entirely in Stryn (Norway). This is
to achieve the high-quality our customers deserve.
Olav Eldøy
Olav Eldøy was born in 1948, and was educated at the Bergen Academy of Arts. He has worked for several Norwegian furniture producers, and also has experience from the international furniture industry. Eldøy has received many awards for his work and held several exhibitions.
Growing up close to nature has made it hard for Eldøy to draw straight lines, something which is reflected in the Dina series' organic shape. The surroundings from his childhood in the 1960's have also been a great source of inspiration.
Kristian Østensen
Kristian Østensen was born in 1937, and has all his life been in the furniture business. He started as an apprentice, going through the ranks in manufacturing, further to sales / marketing and then to design.
In 1991 he created the Rosmersholm series for us. At that time, he was inspired by Ibsen and a thriving bourgeois environment. This era was marked by the styles Georgian/Regency and Biedermeier. The Rosmersholm furniture series has gained a wide recognition.
In 2003, he designed furniture series Hamsun. From Ibsen's bourgeois exuberance, he has created a stylistically almost Spartan furniture range, with simple pure lines and details.
It is no coincidence that also in this series Kristian Østensen take inspiration from one of Norways great writers. Although Hamsun was and still is controversial, Østensen have a great sense of his most notable characters - Isaac Sellanrå - and his simple, frugal lifestyle. Which is reflected in our Hamsun series.
